SUMMARY: This study found several genetic variants associated with CAD by including a more ethnically diverse population than previous studies.
DESCRIPTION: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the main cause of death and disability worldwide. It is the narrowing or blocking of the coronary arteries, which can eventually cause a heart attack or stroke. It is estimated that 30-60% of the individual variation in the risk of CAD is due to genetic factors. This study took previously reported genetic variants associated with CAD in European populations and tested their significance in a cohort of 13,742 individuals of Korean and Japanese ancestries. This revealed multiple genetic variants that are associated with CAD across different populations. The study also identified one novel genetic variant that is associated with CAD.
DID YOU KNOW? In order to reduce your risk of CAD, you should lower your blood pressure and cholesterol levels through things like eating healthy, exercising regularly, and reducing your alcohol consumption. [SOURCE]
